The legendary Dodge Viper could receive a brand new successor, according to a recent media report.

Speaking at FCA’s annual press conference during the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, Sergio Marchionne revealed there is a possibility that an all-new Viper could be introduced, using new architecture.

“The Viper was, has been, a labor of love,” Marchionne commented. “Given the architectural development within the brand, there is a possibility that a new version of the Viper may surface. Whether it will surface in time is unclear to me.”

If Dodge decides to greenlight the new Viper, it is believed the high-performance model will ride on the platform that underpins the Alfa Romeo Giulia and will also be used as a base for several new models of the Italian brand. If rumors turn out to be true, this will be a major technical jump for the Viper as currently it uses an aged platform and a V10 naturally aspirated engine.

In other related news, the Giulia architecture could also be used for replacements of the Dodge Challenger and Charger, as well as for a completely new smaller sports car.
