Red Bull is calling out McLaren for using the X2010 concept as a source of inspiration for the MP4-X revealed yesterday.

The X1 / X2010 concept was introduced way back in 2010 as a fictional vehicle for Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo 5 video game. Fast-forward to yesterday, McLaren revealed the MP4-X billed as being “a conceptual vision for the future of motorsport technology.” It’s easy to notice the similarities between the two, although we wouldn’t exactly say McLaren actually drew the MP4-X by borrowing styling cues from Red Bull’s concept.

In a quick post released yesterday on Twitter, Red Bull poked fun at McLaren by saying it is “five years too late” with the MP4-X. It remains to be seen whether McLaren’s concept will end up in a video game in the near future, but hopefully we will see it in titles such as Forza Motorsport 6, Gran Turismo 6, and the forthcoming Gran Turismo Sport.

Both concepts look extremely sharp and come to reconfirm the importance of optimized aerodynamics as a way to boost performance in the world of motorsport.

In the end, this is just a bit of harmless fun since this is not really a case of copyright infringement. As for the designs of these two concepts, could the Formula 1 cars of the future actually look like this? Only time will tell.
