According to a new report, BMW is getting ready to upgrade the i3 to substantially increase its maximum range.

Undisclosed sources close to BMW cited by Autocar are saying the i3 city car will soon receive an “optimized driveline” that will enable a more efficient powertrain requiring less energy. This upgrade will apparently boost range from the current 80 - 100 miles (128 - 160 km) to more than 124 miles (200 km).

In addition, the revised BMW i3 will benefit from updated electronics that will include new software mapping for the battery cooling system as well as for the electric motor. The lithium-ion battery will also be a new development, but apparently it will have the same capacity of 22 kWh (18.7 kWh usable) like it does now.

The report goes on to specify the range-extending i3 will receive the same array of tweaks and BMW has plans to offer existing customers the chance for a retro-fit option. It’s not known at this point when the update will be effectively launched and if this will increase the model’s price tag.

As a final note, the Leipzig-built i3 is now available in 49 countries from all over the world and more than 80% of customers are new to the BMW Group.
