After yesterday’s sneak preview, Fiat has officially revealed the 2017MY 124 Spider at the LA Auto Show in California.

FCA’s version of the latest Miata combines Japanese reliability with Italian design and the heart of an Abarth. This is more than just a rebadged MX-5 as the Italians are saying they developed entirely new body panels taking inspiration from the original 124 Spider. It comes with more rounded headlights hosting the LED DRLs while at the back there are rectangular taillights also using light-emitting diodes.

As far as the interior cabin is concerned, it clearly shows its roots as you get the same simple yet efficient layout that focuses on the driver’s experience. Just about all of the parts have been sourced from the MX-5, including the infotainment system (now called Fiat Connect 7.0) and the buttons. The roof is just as easy to use and those body-hugging seats seem very comfortable, so everything you like in the Miata you’ll likely find in the 124 Spider revival.

About that heart we mentioned above, it’s an inline-four turbocharged 1.4-liter motor with 160 bhp (119 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) sent to the road through a 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed automatic gearbox. Fiat has implemented a double-wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement, so it should be quite fun to drive if we take into account it’s also very light.

Fiat will sell the first 124 units in United States as a limited-edition Prima Edizione Lusso. These will have an individually numbered commemorative badge and will be offered only in an exclusive Azzurro Italia (Blue) exterior paint combined with a Saddle leather. Customers will also receive a bunch of limited-run items offered only on this special edition, but we will have to wait a bit to find out pricing info.

The 2017MY Fiat 124 US-spec is scheduled to go on sale next summer.
