BMW USA has released the first teaser images of the upcoming i3 Shadow Sport special edition.

Set to be unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the model will reportedly be equipped with "new features" that are available in the United States for the first time.  That's not much to go on but BMW Blog is reporting the special edition will likely have a Fluid Black exterior with a sunroof and 19-inch Cyclone-style alloy wheels.

Production will reportedly be limited to 50 units but there's no word on pricing or delivery dates.

While BMW is keeping details under wraps, we'll remind you the i3 is available as both an electric vehicle and as a range-extended model.

The electric variant has a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor that develops 170 bhp (126 kW) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque.  It enables the car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7.0 seconds before hitting a top speed of 93 mph (149 km/h).  In terms of range, BMW estimates drivers can expect to travel between 80-100 miles (128-160 km) in everyday driving conditions with the car set in Comfort mode.

The range-extended i3 is largely identical but it features a petrol engine that acts as a generator when the battery becomes low.  The model is also slightly slower than the EV variant as the dash from 0-60 mph takes 7.8 seconds but the top speed remains unchanged at 93 mph (149 km/h).
