Volkswagen has admitted it’s investigating the EA288 family of diesel engines.

The German company’s diesel drama could become even bigger if the so-called defeat device has been also installed in the EA288 diesel engines, based on the scandalous EA189 design. A spokesman for the producer has confirmed to DPA agency that it is now looking at the earliest versions of the EA288 units, introduced in 2012 as a successor to the EA189.

There’s no official confirmation regarding the number of the engines, nor the exact models, but Autocar is reporting Volkswagen is probably referring to the Euro 5-compatible 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter TDI engines. The Euro 6 units are free from the cheating software.
