BMW is celebrating their 30th anniversary of offering all-wheel drive by taking a look back at the original 325i Allrad.

Unveiled at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 325i Allrad looked like your typical 3-Series sedan but it features a rear-biased all-wheel drive system that sent 37 percent of the power to the front wheels and 63 percent to the rear wheels.  BMW says this improved handling and traction and Auto Zeitung agreed as they remarked "The new BMW is the new champion when it comes to handling."

All-wheel drive was slow to spread to the rest of BMW's lineup but now it is offered on 12 different models and nearly one in every three BMWs sold is equipped with all-wheel drive.
