Following a lengthy teasing campaign, Suzuki has fully revealed its all-new Baleno five-door hatchback at the 66 th IAA.
Suzuki applied its "liquid flow" design theme on the Baleno and as you can see they decided to play it safe, possibly too safe as some will say it looks bland. Underneath the skin is a brand new architecture which according to the automaker brings a 10% increase in body rigidity and a 15% decrease in weight. The vehicle rides on 15-inch steel or 16-inch alloy wheels and has the following physical dimensions: 3,995 mm length, 1,745 mm width and 1,470 mm height, with a 2,520 mm wheelbase, so it fits in the B segment, but Suzuki keeps referring to the Baleno as a compact hatchback with a 355-liter trunk capacity.
The most important novelty is under the hood where a three-cylinder 1.0-liter BOOSTERJET turbocharged gasoline engine has been installed. It develops 112 PS (82 kW) and 170 Nm (126 lb-ft) of torque sent to the front axle via either a revised 5-speed manual gearbox or an optional 6-speed automatic.
A lesser 1.2-liter DUALJET normally aspirated engine is also available with 90 PS (66 kW) and 120 Nm (89 lb-ft) and this one comes with improved thermal efficiency and works with the aforementioned manual or a continuously variable transmission.
Interestingly, Suzuki will also offer a newly developed mild hybrid system using an integrated starter generator to assist the engine during accelerations. This also generates electricity through regenerative braking and they say it's more efficient than other systems which use regular alternators.
As far as the interior cabin is concerned, the Baleno adopts a simple layout sending a 90s vibe, but it does pack a decent 7-inch touchscreen display part of the infotainment system which provides support for USB, SD cards and Apple CarPlay. Lastly, drivers will be able to enjoy an adaptive cruise control system which incorporates a speed limiter.
Suzuki will start selling the Baleno in Europe at the beginning of 2016.
