Mitsubishi has taken the wraps off the 2016 Outlander PHEV in European specification set to premiere in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

It carries over the same styling tweaks, so Mitsubishi has applied its so-called "Dynamic Shield" front fascia and they are also adding two fresh paint choices called Ruby Black Pearl and Quartz Brown Metallic. Billed as "world's first plug-in hybrid 4WD SUV", the Outlander PHEV facelift also comes with new LED daytime running lights and taillights together with bumper extensions and other decorative bits and pieces to spice things up, including 18-inch two-tone machined alloy wheels.

The changes are more than meets the eye as Mitsubishi has lowered NVH levels by implementing no less than 30 improvements, including more sound-deadening material, dynamic dampers and additional anti-vibration material. Moreover, upgrades in handling, stability and ride have also been applied thanks to numerous revisions to the suspension while the optimized hybrid setup has increased efficiency by 8%, resulting in a 0.6 km extended electric range.

The 2016 Outlander PHEV (Euro-spec) will be on display at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month and it will share the spotlight with the Outlander, L200 Double Cab, i-MiEV, Space Star, Pajero, ASX and Lancer Sportback. In addition, Mitsubishi will bring the Outlander PHEV Baja Portalegre 500 rally car which will also get its European debut.
