Audi has announced the 2016 A3 Sportback e-tron will be priced from $37,900 in the United States.

Set to go on sale in October, the plug-in hybrid features a 1.4-liter TSFI petrol engine, an electric motor and an 8.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.  This enables the car to have a combined maximum output of 204 bhp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

Audi declined to release U.S. performance specifications but the Euro-spec model can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 7.6 seconds before hitting a top speed of 138 mph (222 km/h).  More importantly, the car consumes 1.5 liters / 100 km (156.8 mpg US / 188.3 mpg UK) and can travel up to 31 miles (50 km) on electricity alone.

Besides the eco-friendly powertrain, the A3 Sportback e-tron features Xenon plus headlights, a panoramic sunroof and 16-inch alloy wheels.  The model also has a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and an MMI infotainment system with a seven-inch display.

Note: Pricing excludes federal, state and local incentives as well as a $925 destination charge
