There's no point in judging the design as this is a test mule featuring a Ghibli body with a jacked up suspension and roof weights to simulate the crossover's increased weight. The company's first ever model of this kind was previewed back in 2011 by the Kubang concept and we already know pretty much how it looks like as a bunch of design patents emerged onto the web in May.

Scheduled to go on sale in the first half of next year, the Ghibli-based Levante has already entered pre-production phase and will be officially unveiled in January at NAIAS in Detroit. Maserati has a lot riding on this model as their earnings have gone down by 30% in the second quarter of the year when sales diminished by 13%. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne says Maserati will return to better days next year when the Levante will hit dealerships and hopefully his estimations will come true as it would be a real shame if Maserati will have the same fate as Lancia.

The Levante will be assembled in Turin, Italy and is going to be followed by the Alfieri (coupe & cabrio) and the next generation coupe-only Gran Turismo.
