Volkswagen has announced they are developing an automated fast charging system for the next-generation electric vehicles which will have a range in excess of 500 km (310.6 miles).

Dubbed E-Smart Connect, the system aims to the ease the fast charging process which currently requires an owner to manually connect heavy and stiff cables to their electric vehicle.

In order to do this, the E-Smart Connect system will use a KUKA LBR iiwa robot which has seven drive axles and integrated torque sensors.  Volkswagen says this will enable the robot to securely connect the charging cable to an electric vehicle.

The system is designed to be used in a parking garage and requires an electric vehicle's charging port to be in a target area of 20 x 20 centimeters.  A camera then determines the exact position of the charging socket so the robot can automatically connect the charger.  When charging is completed, the robot will automatically disconnect the cable.
