Audi officials have confirmed the new R8 will eventually be offered with a turbocharged engine.

Speaking to Motoring, Audi Technical Development boss Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg said "It is inevitable that we will go to a turbocharged motor for it at some point. It would be in this model cycle, to give us a fuller range."  His sentiments were echoed by quattro GmbH Managing Director Heinz Peter Hollerweger who confirmed the turbocharged engine would replace the previous model's 4.2-liter V8.

The executives declined to go into specifics but previous reports have suggested the car could be offered with either a turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo V6.
