Volkswagen UK is now taking orders for the economical BlueMotion version of the all-new Passat.

Available both as a sedan and wagon, the thrifty Passat is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbodiesel engine developing 120 PS (88 kW) at 3,600 rpm and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque at 1,750 rpm. It's enough power to enable the mid-size model run the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) journey in 10.8 seconds (+0.2s wagon) and top out at 130 mph (-1 mph wagon) which isn't really impressive, but the BlueMotion version was created specifically for those who want to make fewer stops at the gas station.

The engine works exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and enables both body styles to return a rather impressive 76.3 mpg UK (63.5 mpg US or 3.7 liters / 100 km) in the combined cycle, with corresponding CO2 emissions of only 95 g/km which makes it an ideal solution for business customers.

The Passat BlueMotion (UK-spec) is based on the entry-level S model and comes as standard with a 6.5-inch Composition Media infotainment system, post-collision braking system, driver alert and misfuelling prevention. It also gets standard start/stop system and battery regeneration energy systems while the 17-inch Soho wheels are exclusive to this version and are wrapped around in low-rolling resistance tires.

It can also be visually distinguished by its bespoke front and rear bumpers, chrome front grille highlights and BlueMotion badging while the sports suspension has lowered the vehicle by 15 mm.

Already available on order, the Passat BlueMotion starts at £23,200 in sedan guise and from £24,750 if you go for the more practical wagon. Volkswagen UK will commence deliveries of the two models sometime in August.
