BMW is reporting considering a return to Le Mans with a hydrogen-powered race car.

According to Autocar's sources, the proposal is at an "advanced stage" of consideration and, if approved, the model could enter competition as early as 2018.

Little is known about the car itself but speculation suggests it could be entered into the Garage 56 class which is home to a number of experimental vehicles.

While the idea of a hydrogen-powered race car might sound odd, BMW is reportedly considering the idea as it would bolster of the image of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles ahead of the launch of their own FCV.
