German media is reporting BMW has plans to launch a fully electric SUV as a direct competitor for the upcoming Tesla Model X.

About three months ago BMW announced the third "i" model will not be out before the end of this decade and now we are hearing some juicy rumors about this mysterious vehicle set to be sold alongside the i3 and i8. It will allegedly take the shape of a pure electric SUV built in United States at the company’s factory in Spartanburg where they put together the X-badged models.

The report goes on to specify the project is currently awaiting board approval even though a BMW spokesman has described the report as being simply a “speculation”, but as the saying goes there's no smoke without fire. If green-lighted for production, the third i-labeled model will go head to head with the Tesla Model X which is bound to go on sale later this year so it will take a while until Bavaria will have an answer to Palo Alto's all-electric SUV.
