Mazda has released new details about the optional Bose audio system on the 2016 MX-5.

Since cabin acoustics "differ significantly" depending on the position of the roof, Bose created two unique equalization (EQ) settings - one for driving with the roof closed and other for driving with it open.  The system adjusts automatically and also uses noise compensation technology to compensate for wind noise and road noise.

More importantly, the system adds a pair of 2-inch (50mm) Bose UltraNearfield speakers to the headrests.  Mazda says they use TrueSpace technology to create a "wide sound stage, even though the speakers are just inches away from the listener."

The system also has two 6.5-inch (165mm) speakers in the doors, 1-inch (25mm) neodymium tweeters in the A-pillars, a 7-channel digital amplifier and a 5.25-inch (130mm) woofer that is located in a custom enclosure under the front passenger footwell.
