Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales has confirmed the company is developing a new crossover.

Speaking to Autocar, Gales described the model as “a real Lotus” and “the world’s first lightweight SUV.”

The executive declined to go into specifics but the crossover will reportedly feature aluminum body panels as well as a Toyota-sourced engine.  It will be about the same size as the Porsche Macan but is slated to weigh 200 kg (441 lbs) less than its main competitors.

The model will be built in China as a result of the recently announced joint-venture agreement with Proton and Goldstar Heavy Industrial.  Production is slated to kick off in 2019 and the model will be sold exclusively in China - at least initially.
