Volkswagen has dropped a hint about the possibility of coming out with a Targa version of the next generation Golf.

Scheduled to come out in 2017 or 2018, the eighth generation Golf will once again spawn a soft top cabriolet version, but Volkswagen is also analyzing the prospects of launching a targa variant as hinted last year through the T-ROC concept unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. That was a crossover, but the targa top with removable panels could make it to some type of open-top Golf.

These are more than just speculations as CarAdvice has learned from Volkswagen insiders that a targa Golf is "more than just an idea", which means VW is seriously considering this additional body style for what will end up being the biggest Golf family ever.

In addition, the aforementioned T-ROC concept has chances of hitting the assembly line as a competitor for the upcoming Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet.
