Smart has announced plans to introduce the 2016 ForTwo at the New York Auto Show.

Set to go on sale in September, the US-spec model closely echoes its European counterpart but will only be offered with a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that produces 89 bhp (66 kW) and 100 lb-ft (135 Nm) of torque.  It can be connected to either a five-speed manual or an optional twinamic dual-clutch transmission.

Four different trim levels will be offered - pure, passion, prime and proxy - and even the entry-level pure variant will come equipped with LED daytime driving lights, cruise control and a multifunction steering wheel.  Other highlights include Bluetooth connectivity, power windows and an exterior temperature indicator.

Higher end go one step further as they have a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power / heated mirrors, a height adjustable driver seat and an armrest - among other things.

There will also be an Edition 1 variant that features a white exterior with a lava orange tridion safety cell.  The special edition also has LED headlights, a panoramic glass roof, a sport-tuned suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels with a black finish.  Last but not least, there's black/orange fabric seats, a sport steering wheel and stainless steel pedals.
