The sun is about to set on the Nissan Xterra as Edmunds is reporting the model will be discounted in the United States after the 2015 model year.

Details are limited but the publication is reporting the model is being phased out for "regulatory reasons."  That's pretty vague but it appears Nissan decided they couldn't sell enough Xterras to justify the expensive to make the model compliant with increasingly stringent environmental and safety regulations.

While it's sad to see the model go, it's not terribly surprising as sales have been declining as consumers have opted to buy more refined and fuel-efficient crossovers instead of body-on-frame SUVs.
