Following a preview last year, Lotus has officially launched the Exige S Automatic.

Faster and more eco-friendly than the manual variant, the Exige S Automatic has a six-speed transmission which can change gears in just 240 milliseconds. There's also a Sport mode which sharps the throttle response, opens the engine exhaust bypass valve and increases the traction slip thresholds of the Dynamic Performance Management system.

In terms of performance, the car has a supercharged 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 345 bhp (350 PS / 258 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It is connected to the aforementioned six-speed automatic transmission which enables the coupe to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds) before hitting a top speed of 162 mph (261 km/h) - or 145 mph (233 km/h) in the Exige S Roadster. The coupe also returns 29.4 mpg UK (9.6 L/100km / 24.4 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 222 g/km.

According to Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales, “Expanding the Exige range, with a new automatic gearbox, opens up a new market for those who prefer using a paddle shift with the alternative of an automatic gearshift." He added, "We expect that the Exige S Automatic will account for over a third of the total global sales for the Exige S range as many drivers will appreciate the involvement of a manual paddle-shift and the convenience of an automatic.”

The model is currently available to order and the automatic transmission is a £1,667 (€2,185) option.
