After decades of rumors, it appears the mythical mid-engine Corvette is finally happening as Car & Driver's spies have managed to catch what they believe is a prototype for the long-awaited model.

While the car appears to be a Frankenstein Holden Ute, a closer inspection reveals the car has a Corvette cockpit and a massive rear wing. More notably, the prototype has plenty of room to accommodate the rumored mid-engine configuration.

The prototype doesn't reveal much about the production model but the magazine did some math and determined the wheelbase is approximately 98.9 inches long. This would make the model about eight inches shorter than the current Corvette Stingray.

GM has been relatively tipped lipped about the next-generation Corvette, but the mid-engine model is expected to be launched in 2017 as the Zora ZR1. It will reportedly be sold alongside the Corvette C7 for a few years before the old car is phased out and moved onto the new mid-engine platform.
