BMW is putting the finishing touches on the facelifted 6-Series but new details are starting to emerge about the next-generation model.

According to Car Magazine, the 2017 6-Series will continue to be offered in three body styles - Coupe, Convertible and GranCoupe - but they will be sportier and lighter.

In order to achieve this, the models will reportedly ride on the 35up / CLAR platform that consists of high-strength steel, aluminum, carbon fiber, magnesium and titanium. The Coupe and Convertible are also expected to be smaller which should help to reduce their weight by up to 200 kg (441 lbs).

Engine options remain unconfirmed but the magazine says choices will include:

  • A 3.0-liter six-cylinder petrol with 347 bhp (258 kW)
  • A 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel with 333 bhp (248 kW)
  • A 4.4-liter V8 with 476 bhp (355 kW)
  • A twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 with 600 bhp (447 kW)
