Mercedes and Corticeira Amorim have teamed up to create a surf board made almost entirely out of Portuguese cork.

Designed for professional surfer Garrett McNamara, the surf board was created as part of the MBoard project which has already seen the creation of four other surf boards named “The Silver Arrow of the Seas.”

Mercedes didn't have much to say about the board itself but they confirmed it's an evolution of the original board which enabled McNamara to hit a "staggering speed" of 62.4 km/h (38.7 mph) when surfing at Nazaré in 2013.

While it might sound odd that Mercedes is involved in the development of surf boards, Marketing Manager Jorge Aguiar said “We should seek to stand out from our competitors when building a brand targeted at our customers and prospective customers, in order to encourage greater proximity between the Brand, the products and the consumers. In this sense, the MBoard Project has already accomplished these goals, both in Portugal and abroad."
