The Volkswagen e-Golf and XL1 are being showcased in a new ad that has a Star Trek theme.

Volkswagen says the e-Golf "comes close to being a spaceship" while the XL1 is a "futuristic" model which is why the German marque considered both are suitable for a Star Trek-themed commercial. Driving the e-Golf is none other than 83-year-old William Shatner (Captain Kirk) and behind the wheel of the XL1 is Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock), four days "older" than Shatner.

We remind you the e-Golf is powered by a 115 HP & 270 Nm electric motor granting a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 10.4 seconds and an electronically-limited 81 mph (130 km/h) top speed. It uses a 24.2 kWh battery which allows the electric Golf to cover distances of up to 118 miles (190 km).

As for the XL1, it's an ultra-frugal plug-in hybrid making use of a 48 HP two-cylinder TDI engine, a 27 HP electric motor, a seven-speed DSG and a 5.5 kWh battery. It needs 12.7 seconds until 100 km/h and tops out at 100 mph (162 km/h). More important, the XL1 has an average fuel consumption of 0.9 liters / 100 km (261 mpg US or 313 mpg UK) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 21 g/km. It can do 31 miles (50 km) in electric mode and as much as 310 miles (499 km) as a hybrid.
