Mazda's global design chief has revealed his desire to create a new RX sports car.

Speaking to Automotive News, Ikuo Maeda said the company hasn't green-lighted the model but he'll "never give up" and is always envisioning how the car could look.

Maeda also said the car would have to use a rotary engine because the "R" in RX stands for rotary. However, he is open to a new sports car with a Skyactiv engine as long as it doesn't adopt the iconic moniker.

While there have been countless rumors about a new RX and rotary engine, Automotive News is reporting the powertrain is on the "back burner" so don't get your hopes up.
