This 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO with chassis number 3851GT now holds the record for the most expensive car ever after being auctioned for a staggering 38,115,000 USD.

Auctioned by Bonhams at the Quail Lodge during Pebble Beach, one of the 39 250 GTOs built by Ferrari has managed to take down the world record for the most expensive car, fetching an incredible 38,115,000 USD. As a consequence, it took down the previous 29.65M USD record established in 2013 also at a Bonhams sale by a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R Formula 1 car.

The record-breaking Ferrari 250 GTO was formally owned by Jo Schlesser and hit the auction block with no reserve. While this particular car now holds the official record for the most valuable production car ever, it should be mentioned last year a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO wearing chassis number 5111GT  was sold by collector Paul Pappalardo to an unidentified buyer for 52M USD. Back in 2012, an apple green 1962 250 GTO built specifically for Stirling Moss was sold for a "mere" 35M USD.
