Ford is lowering the fuel economy rating of six vehicles after discovering an error with their internal testing.

According to Ford, the error was related to the "Total Road Load Horsepower'" (TRLHP) which measures a "vehicle-specific resistance level used in vehicle dynamometer testing that determines fuel economy ratings." The TRLHP is "established through engineering models that are validated through vehicle testing, including physical track tests referred to as coastdown testing." During additional coastdown testing of a Fusion Hybrid, the company found the TRLHP did not match the values used for the dynamometer testing. The company also says they "discovered an error specific to how we correlate wind tunnel results into the TRLHP model."

Approximately 200,000 vehicles are affected in the United States and they include most 2014 Fiestas as well as 2013-2014 C-MAX, Fusion and Lincoln MKZ hybrids. Other models include the 2013-2014 C-MAX Energi and Fusion Energi.

Ford will be changing the fuel economy labels for the affected models and will give owners a "goodwill payment" that ranges from $125 to $1,050 - depending on the model and whether it was leased or bought.
