In an interview given to BBC Radio 4, Top Gear's James May said he plans on buying a BMW i3 REx.

Over the years Top Gear has constantly criticized hybrid and electric cars but James May has also been the one who had a slightly different opinion compared to Richard Hammond and especially Jeremy Clarkson. Although May is a big fan of powerful cars, it's a known fact he drives to the studio with a tiny Fiat Panda and he also adores the Dacia Sandero. Now, he has decided to give hybrid cars a chance by purchasing the range extending version of the BMW i3.

He didn't go for the full electric version due to range anxiety issues and he considers the i3 as a small people carrier since despite the very compact dimensions of the vehicle he finds the interior cabin “quite roomy.” The BMW i3 Rex features an electric motor generating 170 PS (125 kW) & 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) which works together with a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery and a two-cylinder range-extending gasoline engine, providing the vehicle with a maximum combined range of 180 miles (300 km). The fully electric i3 can cover distances of 81-99 miles (130-160 km) on a single battery charge.

May will use the BMW i3 REx for city driving while for longer trips his vehicle of choice is a Ferrari.
