The i8 is certainly one of the most interesting cars launched by the Bavarian marque in the last few years so naturally Chris Harris was curious to find out how it feels to drive the plug-in hybrid sportscar which can also run in electric mode for 23 miles (37 km). He was impressed by the fact it's one of the few cars out there which looks almost the same as the concept.

Despite being powered by a small 3-cylinder 1.5-liter Twin Turbo engine, Chris Harris says that it sounds like a 911 although he does admit the sound is digitally enhanced. The conventional engine works with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack to provide a combined output of 362 PS (266 kW). It's enough for a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 4.4 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). More importantly, the i8 will return an impressive 112 mpg US (134.5 mpg UK or 2.1 liters / 100 km) with CO2 emissions of only 49 g/km.

As far as the steering is concerned, Chris Harris says it is very light and accurate but the driver doesn't feel a connection between the steering wheel and wheels. He went on to say it's an exciting vehicle to drive and he believes Porsche 911 drivers will find the BMW i8 an appealing car.
