The chief engineer of large Mercedes crossovers has revealed the company could offer a model to battle the BMW X4.

Speaking to Auto Express, Andreas Zygan said "Whether we build a car like the X4 depends on whether there's enough customers." He went on to say "People want new cars, people are obsessed with new things. Even if we don't know exactly what future holds, we have a modular platform strategy and our task is to develop new segments."

Zygan also hinted the company could offer a higher-end model to compete with range-topping Range Rovers and the upcoming Bentley crossover. As he explained, "If there are more competitors to GL, we need to react. There is definitely a market for those who want something exclusive, not just high-performance."
