BMW celebrates the 30th anniversary of the M5, hints at a 'surprise' [video]

BMW is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the M5 by taking a look back at the original model.

Unveiled at the 1985 Geneva Motor Show, the M5 had a restrained appearance that made it the ideal sleeper car. The model also featured a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance brakes and a 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine that developed 286 PS (210 kW). This enabled the sedan to run from 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and hit a top speed of 245 km/h (152 mph).

Despite costing 80,000 DM, the M5 was a hit as the company sold over 1,000 models by May 1986.

Over the coming months, BMW will highlight the previous M5s before "ending with a surprise." The company is keeping details a closely guarded secret but they have already announced plans to introduce a special anniversary edition at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This likely means we can expect to see an M5 anniversary edition in June.
