A prototype of the China-bound Mercedes-Benz C-Class L was spied recently at a car wash.

Towards the end of last year we heard Mercedes-Benz’s head of Research and Development Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber saying there will be a long wheelbase version of the new C-Class (W205) specifically designed for the Chinese market. The model he was referring to can be seen in these spy photos which depict a prototype wearing a white camouflage at what appears to be a car wash & repair shop.

Seen here is the C180 L variant which will pack a 4-cylinder, 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 156 HP (115 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). The China-only C-Class L will also be offered with 2.0- and 3.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engines and will be manufactured by the Beijing-Benz joint venture.

While the regular C-Class has a 2840mm wheelbase, the L version will add 60mm for the extra comfort of the rear passengers. Going on sale later this year, the C-Class L will have to go up against similar models in this class such as the BMW 3Li and Audi A4L.
