Mazda is allegedly plotting a new baby crossover based on the upcoming next-gen Mazda2.

Automotive News is citing a Japanese report by Nikkei which indicates Mazda will soon unveil an entry-level crossover that will be based on the next generation Mazda2 due to be introduced this summer. Such a model would be positioned below the CX-5 and sold at first only in Japan, but eventually the compact crossover would end up in Europe and emerging markets.

For the moment there aren't any details about North American availability, but we do know the report indicates a price tag between 1.5M yen and 2M yen (about 15,000 - 20,000 USD). At least in Japan, Mazda will reportedly offer the new model with an optional diesel engine.
