Daimler CEO Dr. Dieter Zetsche has revealed the company has previously explored partnerships with BMW, Fiat and Volkswagen.

Speaking during a conference call, Zetsche said "When we were planning the current generation of front-wheel-drive vehicles we were entertaining a number of discussions with BMW, with Fiat, with VW to check whether it makes sense to do something together." However, the company decided the benefits would be marginal so they developed the MFA platform by themselves.

Despite eschewing a partnership during the platform's development, the MFA architecture eventually underpin the 2015 Infiniti Q30. This is a result of a wide-ranging strategic alliance which was signed with Renault-Nissan in 2010.
