Senior sources within Audi have revealed the Q8 will receive an e-tron variant to take on the upcoming Tesla Model X.

Almost a year ago Audi confirmed plans of a range-topping SUV with the Q8 moniker and now rumors are indicating the model will receive an e-tron derivative. The all-electric SUV will get the technology derived from the upcoming R8 e-tron which should be enough for an estimated range of 370 miles (595 km).

The Audi Q8 e-tron will compete with the Tesla Model X and is expected to carry a large battery pack with a capacity of at least 80 kWh. It will come out in 2017 or later with electric motors which will power both axles to provide the SUV with an all-wheel drive setup.

The regular Audi Q8 will ride on the next-gen Q7 platform and will be offered with a variety of gasoline and diesel engines, as well as with a plug-in hybrid system. There will also be a range-topping SQ8 variant while the styling will be sportier compared to the Q7. Audi will sell the Q8 in both five- and seven-seat cabin configurations and will be more expensive than the equivalent second-gen Q7 due towards the end of the year.
