Audi has quietly introduced an "ultra" variant of the A6 Avant 2.0 TDI, following a similar more powerful yet frugal edition of the A3 launched last year.

The 4-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine outputs 175 HP (129 kW) in standard configuration but in the "ultra" variant it has been tuned to deliver 190 HP (140 kW). The torque figure has also gone up by 20 Nm (15 lb-ft) to 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) and thanks to these power upgrades the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint is now done 0.3 seconds faster in 8.7s while the maximum speed has increased by 2 mph to 140 mph (225 km/h).

Despite being more powerful, the Audi A6 Avant 2.0 TDI Ultra Black Edition is now more fuel efficient as it returns 51.1 mpg US (61.4 mpg UK or 4.6 liters / 100 km) whereas the standard model does 47 mpg US (56.5 mpg UK or 5 liters / 100 km). CO2 emissions were also slashed from 132 g/km to 119 g/km.

Pricing of the UK-spec model kicks off at 37,010 GBP for the Avant and comes equipped with standard goodies such as an electric tailgate, DAB radio and the S line bodykit. A sedan version part of the "ultra" range is expected to come out very soon. More details will be disclosed in March when the vehicles will be introduced at the Geneva Motor Show.
