Volkswagen has disclosed pricing details for the Beetle equipped with the direct-injected 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged engine also available in the Jetta and Passat models.

Volkswagen has disclosed pricing details for the Beetle equipped with the direct-injected 1.8-liter TSI turbocharged engine also available in the Jetta and Passat models.

The new motor serves as a replacement for the 5-cylinder 2.5-liter and packs the same 170 bhp (127 kW) but delivered at 700 fewer revs. In addition, torque has been increased by 7 lb-ft (9 Nm) to 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) and is served 2,750 rpm sooner. While the previous 2.5 models came with hydraulic steering, the 1.8T now has electric power steering.

Aside from delivering output faster, the 1.8T model is also more economical as it will do 33 mpg on the highway with the six-speed automatic gearbox, compared to the previous version which achieved 29 mpg. City mileage has also gone up from 22 mpg to 25 mpg while the combined fuel economy now stands at 28 mpg compared to the previous 25 mpg for the version equipped with the five-cylinder engine.

Five-speed manual 'box-fitted Beetle 1.8T will do 24 mpg city / 33 mpg highway / 27 mpg combined compared to the 22 / 31 / 25 achieved by the outgoing engine.

Pricing for the coupe kicks off at 20,295 USD manual / 21,395 USD automatic and from 25,170 USD if you opt for the convertible (automatic only). It should be noted these prices do not include the additional 820 USD destination charge.
