According to a recent report, the Volkswagen Dune concept could preview a future special edition.

Details are limited but Volkswagen has previously said the concept "looks production ready" and "shows the potential for a new production version of the sportiest Beetle ever." This strongly suggests the concept will be used to gauge customer response before green-lighting a production variant.

As we have previously reported, the Dune concept is based on the Beetle R-Line and features an off-road inspired exterior with skid plates and 19-inch aluminum wheels. The model also had a ventilated hood, honeycomb mesh grille inserts and an increased ride height.

Power was provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that developed 210 bhp (156 kW). It was connected to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission which sent power to the front wheels via an electronic XDS differential.
