Volvo is committed to eco-friendly four-cylinder engines but the company has just unveiled their new 5.0-liter V8 for the V8 Supercar Championship.

Set to be used in the Volvo Polestar Racing S60, the engine is based on the company's 4.4-liter V8 that was used in the S80 and XC90. It has been specially modified by Polestar for racing duty.

Performance specifications were not released but the engine features aluminum heads, eight throttle bodies and a 10:1 compression ratio. The engine also has a coil-on-plug ignition system and a "distinctive sound."

According to Polestar Managing Director Christian Dahl, "We have completed a number of high-rev simulations and long-distance runs and we're very happy with the figures and outcomes we've achieved. The next step is to fit the engine to the race car and continue the pre-season development timetable."
