Volkswagen is continuing development of the XL Sport which could enter limited production series in 2014.

Autocar is citing "high-ranking insiders" at VW which have revealed a performance version of the XL1 with the engine taken from a Ducati 1199 Panigale will be introduced. The company's head of R&D, Hans-Jakob Neusser, said during the launch of the e-Golf earlier this week the engineering, development and testing for this car is in advanced stages.

He did not disclose a launch date but rumors suggest it will be revealed in March 2014 at the Geneva Motor Show before going into limited production. It will allegedly be called the "XLR" and will be powered by a two-cylinder 1.2-liter gasoline engine outputting 187 bhp (140 kW) at 10,750 rpm and 91 lb-ft (123 Nm) of torque at 9,000 rpm.

As some of you might remember, Volkswagen provided a sneak preview of the car towards the end of September during a lecture held at the University of Vienna.
