A heavily modified Ford GT was able to hit an impressive top speed of 278.2 mph last weekend at the Texas Mile in Beeville, Texas.

The Ford GT was modified by M2K Motorsports and packs no less than 2,000 HP (1,471 kW) which was enough eradicate Hennessey's domination of the Texas Mile in the last few years. The previous record was established in March with a top speed of 267.6 mph (430.6 km/h) but this has been taken down by 10.6 mph (17 km/h) as the customized Ford GT hit 278.2 mph (447.7 km/h).

This particular Ford GT is owned by Mark Heidaker and is in fact the same car which established the previous 257.7 mph (414.7 km/h), 263.3 mph (423.7 km/h) and 267.7 mph (430.6 km/h) records. The car was originally modified by Hennessey but after the 267.7 mph speed run it was disassembled and afterwards rebuilt by M2K Motorsports with help from Kevin Kesterson, John Mihovetz and Shane T.
