A handful of camouflaged Mercedes SLS AMGs have been spotted in Europe and a new report is indicating they are just prototypes being used to test engines for the upcoming SLC / C190 / AMG GT.

Autocar says the prototypes are likely equipped with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine and being run to test the some cooling components. This sounds a tad peculiar since Mercedes is already testing full-bodied AMG GT prototypes but remains a possibility.

Mercedes has been coy on details but the AMG GT is expected to be loosely based on the SLS AMG and weigh about 3300 lbs (1496 kg). It could be introduced as early as next year and be offered with the aforementioned twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine. Specifications remain a mystery but Car & Driver says it will produce approxomitely 500 bhp (372 kW).  They could also be a detuned entry-level model as well as a Black Series variant with up to 600 bhp (447 kW).
