BMW's front-wheel drive future is inching closer to reality as our spies have snapped the first pictures of the FAST (Family Activity Sports Tourer).

Destined to become the brand's entry-level crossover, the FAST is expected to ride on the company's new UKL platform that will underpin the 1-Series GT and the 2014 MINI Cooper.

The prototype is heavily disguised but we can see it will have a rounded front fascia with a twin-kidney grille and prominent air intakes. There's also a sloping roofline, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and a dual exhaust system.

Engine options will likely be shared with the 1-Series GT so expect the model will be offered with the company's new 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder. Detailed specifications haven't been announced but BMW has previously confirmed the petrol unit will have outputs ranging from 122-224 HP (90-165 kW), while the diesel will produce between 82-184 HP (60-135 kW).
