Toyota has announced plans to introduce a Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicle (FCHV) concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Set to preview the 2015 production model, the FCHV will use a fuel cell, two high-pressure hydrogen tanks, a 21kW battery and a Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

Detailed specifications were not released but engineers have made several improvements to the system since the FCV-R concept debuted at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. As Toyota explained, engineers have reduced the size of the fuel cell stack while increasing its output to 3.0kW per liter. They have also found increased the range to 350+ miles (563 km) and used to different materials which enable it to work in temperatures as low as -30°C (-22°F).

The production model is expected to carry a base price of approximately £70,000 ($109,030 / €82,575) but Toyota is hopeful that additional cost savings can be found before the model is launched.
