Mercedes has quietly announced plans to rapidly expand their hybrid lineup.
Noting that their hybrid system is modular and scalable, the company confirmed plans to launch "numerous" new hybrids in the future. Mercedes declined to go into specifics but said the hybrid system can work with inline four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines as well as V6 petrol engines.
Mercedes also revealed the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid will be launched next year and "set new standards in the luxury class" thanks to a fuel consumption rating of less than 4 L/100km (58.8 mpg US / 70.6 mpg UK). Little else is known about the model but it is expected to feature an electric motor, an 8.7 kWh battery and a six-cylinder petrol engine that develops 333 HP (245 kW) and 480 Nm (354 lb-ft) of torque.
