The pure EV model will be powered by a rear-mounted electric motor generating 170 HP (125 kW) and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque. This electric motor weighs 50 kg (110 lbs) and enables the i3 to perform the 0-37 mph (0-60 km/h) sprint in 3.7 seconds while 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) takes just 7.2 seconds before reaching a limited top speed of 93 mph (150 km/h). The 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack will provide a range of 81 to 99 miles (130 to 160 km).

The BMW i3 fitted with a range-extending engine comes with a two-cylinder 650cc gasoline mill producing 34 HP (25 kW) which sits immediately adjacent to the electric motor above the rear axle. In this configuration, the i3 has a range of up to 180 miles (300 km).

Charging the battery to an 80 percent level takes approximately half an hour from a public fast-charging station (50 kW), while a full charge will be done in around six hours when using the optional BMW i Wallbox which can use the maximum current strength available. It takes about eight hours to fully charge the battery from a regular household socket.

The BMW i3 has a curb weight of only 1,195 kg (2,634 lbs) thanks to a carbon fiber reinforced plastic passenger cell which also grants the vehicle with a perfect 50:50 weight distribution. It has a MacPherson single-joint front suspension and a five-link rear setup, while the 19-inch wheels are covered in specially-developed 155/70 R19 narrow tires.
