Cadillac has reportedly cancelled the prospects of a rear-wheel drive sedan flagship model.

Ever since the stunning Ciel Concept debuted in 2011 at Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance there have been many rumors and speculations about a flagship model. If we go back even further, in 2003 at Detroit Auto Show the American luxury marque revealed the impressive V16-powered Sixteen Concept which had 1,000 bhp (745 kW) and 1,000 lb-ft (1,354 Nm).

After Cadillac did some math, they reached the conclusion a production model would carry a starting price of more than 100,000 USD in order for them to make a profit. Due to high investments in what would have been a low-volume niche model, Cadillac has decided to axe the project.

The good news is a rear-wheel drive sedan to compete with the BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class is already in the works and will be out in 2016 as a 2017MY. It will ride on a new platform entitled Omega designed for large, rear-wheel drive models.
