Ford has introduced their new Electronic Brake Light system which uses car-to-car communications technology to help prevent accidents.

Currently under development, the system warns drivers if a car ahead of them is in an emergency braking situation. When this occurs, a dashboard light illuminates to notify the driver. During testing, Ford discovered the system could enable drivers to brake earlier and potentially mitigate or avoid a collision altogether.

Besides the Electronic Brake Light, Ford is testing 19 other systems as part of the Safe Intelligent Mobility – Testfield Germany (simTD) program. Other systems in development are Traffic Sign Assistant and an Obstacle Warning system which alerts drivers to the "presence, position and type of potentially hazardous objects" on the road.
